110 governments adopted this scientific consensus: It's extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of observed warming since the mid-20th century.
At a news conference in Stockholm Friday, World Meteorological Organization Secretary General Michael Jarraud underscored the importance of the finding.
"It should serve as yet another wake-up call that our activities today will have a profound impact on society, not only for us, but for many generations to come."
Those activities include the burning of fossil fuels in factories, buildings and cars which emit heat-trapping gases. The report confirms that Arctic ice is melting faster than previously predicted and sea level rise has been accelerating and will continue to do so. It also reinforces the link between climate and extreme weather events like heavy rainfall and heat waves. |
